New Bankruptcy Law Secrets

Bankruptcy Filing Fees

You should get a complete list of fees during your first meeting with your lawyer. In most cases the attorney fee will have to be paid right up front. This is the usual procedure.

If at any time you feel your attorney is charging you additional or unfair fees, you have the right to raise this topic with the court. They have the power to reduce the rates or even punish your lawyer if he crosses the line on the rules that govern their fees.

As of 2006 the filing fee payable to the court is around $275. The lawyers fee will range anywhere from $400 to as high as $2,000 in some areas.

In addition plan to pay around $100 for the legally required pre-filing credit counseling.

If you can't afford these fees, ask your lawyer about splitting his fee in half. One half is paid before filing and the other is paid after filing.
